RYA Youth Sailing Scheme

At Weir Wood Sailing Centre, our Youth RYA Training Scheme is designed to ignite the passion for sailing in young enthusiasts. Our courses are tailored for children and teenagers, providing a fun, safe, and engaging environment where they can develop their sailing skills and confidence on the water. Our experienced instructors are dedicated to fostering a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, ensuring that every young sailor has a memorable and educational experience. With access to our fleet of well-maintained boats and the beautiful Weir Wood Reservoir, your child will have the perfect setting to learn and enjoy sailing.

Stage 1: Introduction to Sailing Designed for absolute beginners, Stage 1 introduces young sailors to the basics of sailing, including rigging, launching, and sailing in all directions. By the end of this course, participants will have a basic understanding of how to sail in light winds under supervision.

Stage 2: Developing Skills Stage 2 builds on the skills learned in Stage 1. Young sailors will refine their tacking and gybing techniques, learn how to recover from a capsize, and gain more confidence in their abilities. The goal is to become more independent on the water.

Stage 3: Sailing Independently Stage 3 focuses on sailing in moderate conditions with increased confidence. Participants will learn more advanced sailing techniques, including sailing upwind and downwind, and gain a deeper understanding of boat handling and safety procedures.

Stage 4: Advanced Techniques In Stage 4, sailors will consolidate their skills and learn advanced techniques such as racing, use of spinnakers, and sailing in stronger winds. This stage aims to prepare young sailors for competitive sailing and advanced courses.
